On her first space voyage, ace mathematician Mary Sue Surname finds herself fighting for her life when her ship is overtaken by demonic penguins. Luckily, she has help: her quirky ten-year-old brother Gary and best friend RayVyn Maddysyhnn Sparkles III are with her, and hiding in the cellar they discover the ship's first mate, Hunk McDreamy, who just happens to know the penguins' fatal weakness: poker. The battle for control of the vessel is on, but there's a time limit: if the penguins manage to take the ship to their homeworld, none of our heroes stand a chance of escaping. Meanwhile, a rift grows between Mary Sue and RayVyn, as both fall head-over-heels for Hunk. In the end, of course, all goes well: our heroes defeat the mighty penguin leader, the fearsome Pammy the Penguin, in a poker game, and Mary Sue manages to salvage both her friendship with RayVyn and her love life while learning important life lessons.

Er, you haven't already written something like that, have you? No, actually, don't tell me if you have. I don't want to know.

I only wish I had. :D

Mary Sue couldn't help feeling like this game, to use a simple word, was somehow more important than that. Not only would it decide their fate, but somehow it was intrinsically tied in to the very structure of the universe, and the tension around the table was heavy with the metaphor. Her eyes flicked upwards from her hand to the face of her opponent, and she silently cursed whatever whim of nature had given penguins such good poker faces.

"Fuck them," Jo said simply, a note of smug satisfaction colouring her voice as she stretched languidly. Meaghan laughed, and the two men looked at each other across the room, a silent communication passing between them. Caution, though, didn't have a fighting chance in this group; there was little either of them wouldn't agree to, in the end, for their girls.

She'd only been browsing the shelves for a few moments when Jacqueline returned, alone this time. She came closer, ostensibly to see what Astra was looking at, and though they didn't touch Astra felt a small thrill where they almost did, skin prickling with anticipation. "Are you wearing it?" Jacqueline asked in a low voice, and she nodded in reply, throat too tight for the moment for words.
