only tangentally related to the warnings drama
Just now come across a fic with this warning:

Warnings: A touch of slash (in a loving way !), a hint of het-slash and one moment of extreme violence.

I am confused. Violence I understand, obviously, but what is this "het-slash" and why does slash need to be specified as "in a loving way"?

BEWILDERED.

It is my default. Of Awesome. And a representation of my utter obsession with Sylar that manifests itself in the fact that the default icon for my other OOC journal is also Sylar.

I'm about to start reading the fic (start, at least, I'm not sure if I'll finish based on subtle clues from the headers that it might not be to my taste) so maybe I'll find out!

I always understood that slash was meant to be a pairing of two characters in a series who weren't meant to be together; therefore any pairing (Tuvok/B'Elanna or whatever) would be 'slash'; it seems to have come to mean m/m, but I don't believe that was the original intent.

idk, back in the late nineties/early 00s I hung out with a bunch of local fen in their late 30s who'd been in fandom a loooooong time and I got the impression slash had been m/m (or to a lesser extent f/f but even then that was usually femmeslash) right back to the sixties. Non canon ships just got called.. non canon ships. It might be different in different parts of fandom though, like the smush names that apparently are from Japanese influences? (and in this discussion I failed hardcore when someone was giving examples like Jianto and Jacktor and my honest response to the latter was "Jack/tractor??". Apparently it was supposed to be Jack/Doctor. *facepalm*)

slash is Old School. Same sex relationshios. kirk/spock is classic. It is only recently the / gets used to mean any non-canon pairiong. Canon pairings were not even warned about. They just... were.
BTW, I am an Old Lady of 47, been in fandom since I was 13 - and slash zines were hidden under tables, in boxes and you had to know who to ask and how to ask for them.
Jactor...ROTFLMAO! There is a kid around here (maybe late 20's) who kind of looks like a young Jack Harkness. Watching him trundle out in the field on the tractor - other than just being plain old HOT!- is now gonna make me LOL!

Yeah we used to read out of printed out and bound zines of fic. I might actually still have a couple somewhere but god only knows, I still have boxes full of crap that haven't been unpacked in six years.
