big spoilers for the second post-credits scene, Black Panther )

Jan. 12th, 2018

I'm meant to be trying to sleep so obviously instead I'm thinking about in character responses to shag marry kill team america edition (sam/steve/bucky). I think if you asked like a thousand people the most common response would *probanly* be marry Steve, then from the other two shag Bucky and kill Sam, but hardly any of my characters would actually pick that and they'd do it in a different order if they did.

Maya: kill Sam at least partly just because she doesn't know him very well, then have wild sex with Bucky (specifically PH version) and marry Steve for lots of conversations about art, and restrictive isolated childhoods that suddenly turned into a lot of privilege, and possibly complicated feelings about America.
Melissa: shag 616 Bucky, then kill Steve and marry Sam. They can fly together!
Elsa: kill Steve, shag Bucky, marry Sam so he can fly her around and drop her on monsters.
Laura: marry Bucky, shag Sam, and kill Steve because she met him when she was 9 and that's a little weird.
Ianto: shag Steve, for sure. Marry Sam the big nerd* and kill Bucky. *whether Sam having psychology training subconsciously influences this choice or not is up in the air.
America: can't she just drop kick all of them?
TJ: shag Sam, kill Bucky and marry Steve, but only if it's a sexless marriage of convenience, otherwise swap Steve and Bucky. He's like her uncle!
Aracely: no
Falke: in a *completely* hypothetical situation because he doesn't like people touching him, kill his doppelganger, shag Bucky (canon MCU or possibly 616 who he met on Knowhere), marry Steve.

Aaaaand I'd better put the tablet away and avoid the blue light in my eyes.

I really just cannot decide what I think of Falcon yet. I think it's sort of a position where I like it except for...

- (not necessarily bad but kind of weird) suddenly Sam really cares about swearing in a way that comes across almost like a white person's stereotype of a black momma threatening to wash a kid's mouth out with soap because they said 'damn'
- (ditto) lots of name dropping of different 'black' music to highlight generational difference. Rayshaun mentions Wu Tang, Sam counters with Earth, Wind and Fire. Rayshaun mentions Rihanna and Beyonce, Sam counters with Lauryn Hill. (And yeah, my headcanon totally was that he's a Lauryn Hill fan, but this stuff is coming up weirdly often.) Sam and Shaun (and back in CA:SW Sam and Joaquin) have plenty of other ways to show their different perspectives - though some of that has been problematic as well like the notorious bit where Joaquin is being passionate about, like, human rights and stuff and Sam says something like "sorry [to an absent Steve] if I was ever like that."
- (actually annoying) CLUNK. That was the sound of an anvil being dropped. I totally assumed Sam was being sarcastic when he suggested telling the cops that the mayor was replaced by a demon, and that would have been kind of anvil-icious but still in character and fine, but then the "you have a point" just ruins the whole bit for me. It should have been an in-joke between two characters who were talking from shared experience. Sam is not naive. He's been arrested because cops assumed he was the bad guy before. It wasn't even that old an issue that had that as a flashback scene, it was in the early issues of his Captain America run!

And then you get little bits that I do actually enjoy without feeling weird. I think part of it is just that Spencer did such a terrible job with him in the Captain America run that I don't really trust them with his character anymore. And part is that I can see that they're trying to be relevant and explore what it's like to be a black hero in the current climate, but I don't think the writers actually understand what they're trying to write about enough to sound in any way authentic.

Even though it neverrrrr comes up in game I kind of enjoy coming up with funny stories Sam tells about the shit his asshole (616) friends do. So far my favourite one for Steve is the time he was bored on April 1 one year so he went to the Smithsonian in his uniform to pretend to be a statue for a while until a chance comes up to just casually interject something in a nearby conversation, and for Bucky the time Sam almost died choking on his own laughter in the middle of a fight when some bad guy started sputtering about the Geneva Convention and Bucky deadpanned something like, "Is that one of those anime things?"

Posting too much today because I love to share: things I notice in fanvids edition.

In Bucky's flashbacks, HYDRA seems to be amputating his arm a couple of inches above the elbow. It's hard to tell because he's looking down at his body, but it's definitely towards that end of his upper arm. When they're dragging him through the snow the fall itself seems to have taken off most of his lower arm somewhere around the elbow joint. A lot of fic I've read written post Winter Soldier and pre Civil War, if it goes into detail at all, seems to assume that the prosthetic is anchored on the remains of his upper arm, including the bone. That would make a lot of sense if you were attaching a metal arm to someone, after all.

After he and Steve fight Tony at the end of Civil War though, Bucky's arm has been ripped off at the shoulder.

I really, really hope that through the years that metal arm put too much stress on his original upper arm and they'd done further surgery to just anchor it at the shoulder or something, knowing that they wouldn't be keeping him around for that much longer anyway. Because otherwise it would seem that Tony may have removed not just most of his prosthetic, but the remaining pieces of his actual arm.

You're welcome for this very cheerful observation. Someone should write a fic where Tony's like "hey I can see how this arm works now OH SHIT THAT'S NOT METAL."

I'm... not sure how I feel about Falcon #1. Apart from my initial reaction to the cover, which was "wow, that red symbol on his uniform really outlines his dick."

idk if anyone cares about spoilers )

character double musings )

Sep. 14th, 2017

Marvel faves with current titles:
Sam Wilson
Elsa Bloodstone (!)
Nico Minoru (!!)
Laura Kinney

Marvel faves without current titles:
Maya Lopez

But at least Maya's alive again. TJ Wagner presumably died in an incursion since she was in an alternate universe.

Anyway I'm super fucking stoked for Monsters Unleashed and RUNAWAYS.

I found an archive of strange comic book storylines and it's glorious. Featuring: Luke Cage goes to Latveria to demand the $200 Dr Doom owes him, Wasp and She-Hulk rate the Avengers men for hunkiness (Jen only gave Sam a 5! If that isn't heresy enough, that's the same score she gave John Walker), Steve rates the Avengers on Avengerability (he doesn't rate Sam very well either but that's because Sam hated being an Avenger, so it's fair), "other vehicles talk smack to Wonder Woman's robot plane", "that time Superman gained the ability to shoot mini-Supermen out of his hands", Matt Murdock's twin brother Mike, and what I was actually looking up which was the original Capwolf.

Deleted scene, Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014):

STEVE ROGERS changing into the uniform he's just stolen from the Smithsonian. It's been on display for years, in storage for decades. It's a little starched into the shape of the mannequin and incredibly musty.

ROGERS: This was a stupid idea.

total ramble: SHIELD is scared of Sam's birds )

Apr. 29th, 2017

I can't believe I never realised this before but I'm finally watching Guardians of the Galaxy and Peter made a comment about putting up a blacklight and his ship lighting up like a Jackson Pollock painting.

Which reminded me that birds can see in UV.

Which means that, when Sam looks through their eyes, so can he.

I have to wonder how many times he's just bit his tongue and not said anything even though he really wanted to.

LOL so I'm reading that last run of Captain America with Dimension Z and all that crazy shit and near the end it shows what can only be Sam's apartment based on the posters and music collection etc. (And the fact that it's just him and Jet there and she sure as hell doesn't have a place.) His apartment is really high up in a skyscraper in the Upper West Side. This is when Steve's already turned crazy old, Sam's about to be made Captain America, and in a matter of months he's going to be needing to ask his brother for money to pay his bills and living somewhere that's definitely not the same place. So at first I was like "WTF?"

Then I realised, actually, it totally makes sense. First, later on he's on the outs with SHIELD, whereas while Steve's Captain America they work with SHIELD a lot. He's probably listed as a contractor and getting paid by them, and when he gets banned from SHIELD for helping the Whisperer escape and negotiate an immunity deal they'd cut him off. Also, he grew up poor as hell. He spent all his time at work, at school, doing community work, or trying to raise his siblings. His money management skills are all based around making ends meet when he's barely got two bucks to rub together. SHIELD contractor pay? Hell yes, he's going to rent a place way up in the sky in the Upper West Side. He's probably also giving his niblings tons of presents and donating a heap to the family's church. He has dick all savings. Which made me think of last Christmas in Displaced when I had him make a huge list of people to get presents for and max out a credit card, which is exactly the same behaviour. I fucking love when things tie together like that.

Holy shit I forgot about this:

Mar. 7th, 2017

thought I had while IJ was down:

Reading a fanfic, there was a reference to Steve being named People Magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" and suddenly I'm wondering about the six months or so when Sam was first Captain America and going along with all the tokenistic figurehead friend of the press stuff. Like, he was on a float in a Pride parade, obviously he was doing some major publicity stuff. So, like, what else exactly? Are there magazines with 8 page spreads where he's making bedroom eyes that all his friends laugh at him about when they're out drinking? Did he do a Calvin Klein ad? What sort of stuff did the interviews get into? (Not his political views, apparently.) Did he get to do photo ops with Beyonce and Obama?

I need to make this my new headcanon. Sam is really, really embarrassed about those six months. (Okay, not about meeting Beyonce or Obama. But the magazine interviews and photoshoots. Definitely those.)

Possibly once I've finished with the so-far-24k fic I'm writing right now I need to jump back to 616 and write one where after he and Steve make up, after Pleasant Hill, them and Bucky all take the time to hang out again, have a beer or two… and Steve just absolutely roasts him. (He owns every piece of media publicity Sam did, because it's hilarious he's a good friend.) Bucky almost chokes on his own laughter and Sam hates both of them.

Captain America: Sam Wilson #19 isn't terrible. Which is a great example of damning with faint praise, because what it is is what you get when you ask a privileged white guy with a passing knowledge of Rodney King, ten minutes to read about racism in the criminal justice system, and the opinion that turning Steve into a Nazi is a brilliant idea, to write a comic about a black superhero. Very, very simplistic.

Nov. 29th, 2016

I got all caught up on Civil War II (well, the actual CWII title + the CW issues in ANAD Avengers and CA:Sam Wilson) but it's not quite finished so I don't have to decide yet about canon updating Sam. But if I did right now the only real fallout would be with 616 Clint and maybe Jen. And probably a lot of punching bags.

Also I skimmed through the first Civil War: Kingpin and there's no mention of Echo because I guess his adopted daughter being alive again is just not very important? I have three more but I really hate the artist's style. I just want to know why she's randomly alive and whether it's a case of being alive again or her death being retconned or what. Surely they didn't just bring her back on a whim for a single appearance in Daredevil Annual omg. This is gonna bother the hell out of me.

Anyway we need a Miles Morales and Kamala Khan. And a Tony.

(lol and I have five permanent accounts now. added [info]ashtawawidiwin.)

Nov. 20th, 2016

When you go to double-check something on the wiki page of your canonically dead character and THEY GOT BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE HOLY SHIT.

Nov. 13th, 2016

Mental image where Sam and Bucky watch Leverage together because it's the only time they really get on. Steve joins them for one ep where Hardison and Spencer are being really homoerotic and starts teasing them about watching tv about themselves because he's a troll. So Bucky starts asking if that makes him Parker and Sam does the totally straight faced "dude, that's so racist, you can't make me Hardison just because I'm black" thing.

Then Bucky's like "....well you are a massive dork" and they get distracted squabbling while Steve just sits there really entertained.

edit: after discussing this with my sister, we offer the following correction:

Sam is Hardison
Bucky is Spencer
Natasha is Parker
Tony is Nate
Steve is Nate's ex Maggie

She also says that the Hulk is Sophie. Not Bruce, the Hulk.
